The Opportunity

Create a complex interactive system in response to a design challenge

I chose to create a touchscreen kiosk experience for a fictional custom Crocs retail installation. I imagined a playful, in-store environment where users could personalize their Crocs on a digital interface and then watch them be made live through an automated “creation station” on-site. The challenge required not only developing a compelling visual and interactive experience, but also addressing real-world retail functionality, like catalog navigation, product customization, and error handling.

Timeline

Hardware

I specified the real life application of the project, including device, dimensions, location, and general exhibit information.

Content

I analyzed the Crocs catalogue, categorizing products by type, style, and other subtypes. I also defined the content display order, available information, and restrictions.

Functionality

I defined the user journey through the experience, including considerations for accessibility, documentation, user delight, error prevention and handling, backwards navigation, timeouts, and editing, restarting, or cancelling an order.

Workflow

Mapping the user journey, emphasizing logic, sequence, and decision points to clarify how the experience happens

Mockups

Physical

By modeling them to scale, I was able to confirm size, spacing, and placement of UI elements.

Virtual

I built virtual mockups to place the device within the context of its retail environment, showing how the kiosk fits into the physical space and how users might encounter and interact with it in real-world conditions.

Outlining how users will move through the experience and what features they will encounter, using annotations to clarify design intent

A comprehensive guide for the kiosk's visual design, outlining specific details for every element

Final Designs

Effective UX is built on comprehensive systems that balance imagination, accessibility, and real-world constraint

This challenge pushed me to think critically about how users interact with digital kiosks in public spaces and retail settings, and how design can enhance both functionality and delight in those environments. I explored everything from systems thinking and UX workflow logic to visual hierarchy, accessibility, and motion as a storytelling tool.

This project challenged me to design a kiosk experience that was imaginative, functional, and grounded in real-world constraints. Through the process, I deepened my understanding of how to shape user flows, design with intent, and build systems that feel cohesive from start to finish. Through the different stages of research, ideation, documentation, and refinement, I kept my end user in mind. In the end, it was each step of the process, not just the polished outcome, that taught me the most.
